Ellie Belmont, a retired college teacher, wants to leave the house she shared with her wife, who died three years ago. Kathryn Kepler, a retired psychotherapist, finds life as a country club divorcée lonely. They meet by chance at a coffee shop and bond over downsizing. Sparks of attraction ignite on a road trip from Minnesota to California. After a romantic few days in Yosemite, they must deal with the real world - Kathryn’s homophobic daughter, medical cannabis, and a run-in with the law. A love story about mature passion and personal integrity, A Light on Altered Land will have listeners cheering for this winsome couple.

But a few chapters in, and the book had captivated me. The story is genuinely moving, and the particulars of the subculture explored - lesbians just a few years older than me - was intimately familiar and at times deeply touching.
When you come from a very particular group, one that is often ignored or trivialized, you never really expect to see your conflicts and history explored with seriousness and depth. I wept along with the protagonist about Michigan, and appreciated the touch points and the unique perspective of this character who embodied so much of my lived experience.
The storyline has sociological merit, and numerous political points about ageism and such, but that isn’t what I most enjoyed. I cared about the characters and the unfolding love story also. The narration was flawless and added depth and feeling to the story in an unobtrusive way.
I look forward to seeing more from this author!
