The inspiring classic that The New Yorker called "an exciting tale [with] top-notch writing," about one girl facing harsh conditions and huge responsibility as she brings her family to the American colonies.

Featuring a heroine with faith, courage, and a great deal of grit, this acclaimed historical fiction novel portrays the realities faced by three children hoping to find a new home in an unknown land.

Amanda Freebold doesn't know what to do. Her father left three years ago for the new colony of Jamestown in America, thousands of miles away. But now that her mother has died, Amanda is left to take care of her younger brother and sister all alone back in England.

As the new head of the family, Amanda finally decides to take her brother and sister to America to find Father. The ocean crossing is long and hard, and the children don't know whom to trust. But with her father's little brass lion's head to guard them, Amanda knows that somehow everything will work out.

A Lion to Guard us was a great book. We listened for a school assignment and really enjoyed. The chapters are very short so you can get through it pretty quickly.

Great story for kids learning about traveling to America during colonial times. Simple and easy to understand story from a child’s point of view. The reader has an British accent which is necessary for a story told from the perspective of someone raised in London as the main character is.

Great story for kids!

My kids are 7 and 10. We are reading this for school. The accent and inflections make this book very difficult to understand. I would not have purchased this if I knew it was so accented. The story is great. The delivery is not good for kiddos.

Not great for kids due to accent

This book is not an example of high-quality, well-written children's literature. The characters are terribly flat and stereotypical and the surrounding events, which could have made for a wonderfully engaging and meaningful story, are presented in a dull and uninteresting way. We found it quite depressing with few, if any, redeeming qualities. There are much better options out there if you are looking for historical fiction of the colonial period.

Don't bother
