August 1920, Dublin, Ireland: A fraught task keeps Verity and her husband Sidney in the country after their initial clandestine mission has been completed: the traitor Lord Ardmore is scheming to employ the deadly phosgene gas he's stolen for some terrifying purpose, and the couple will need both the Crown forces and the rebels' help to thwart him.

As they pursue their quarry, they are drawn into a case involving a series of cunning and brazen jewel thefts. Many believe it is the work of the Irish rebels, seeking to fund their revolution, but when Verity and Sidney are also approached by Michael Collins and the Irish Republican Army to unmask the thief, they suspect he may instead be an opportunist using the political unrest as a cover for his crimes.

As the thief continues to pull ever more risky jobs—including targeting Verity and their friends—the couple receive new intelligence that the gas they seek may be intended for a crowded event, one that the entire world will be attuned to. They must stop Lord Ardmore at all costs—or the consequences will be devastating....

I am done. the narrator has ruined this series for me and IMHO, I no longer care about the players either. if Verity dies or Sydney dies, I won't be upset.

narrator has lost me

This book repeated quite a lot from the previous book and then didn’t finish the story. It’s more like a magazine serial than a novel; it’s designed to make you buy another book, and is not an appropriate way to handle a novel.

I liked the plot and the historical research that the author always puts in to this series. It left me guessing what’s next again!

Riveting til the end!

to much time spent describing locations that added nothing to the story. it gets to the point of droning on about historical facts more like a documentary. i like back story support bit this took hours. and after so many books she still has no wins against ardmore. she may have stopped it but the ending takes away the victory.i spent to much to get left hanging again im done.

too much and no wins against ardmore

Right now I am so angry with Ms Huber it’s hard to complete a review. After many, hours of listening to a narrator so difficult to understand whenever she lowered her voice that I had to raise the volume ridiculously high, to have it be a cliff hanger is a betrayal of trust. I hate this literary device. It ruined the book for me.
