Another lie we tell ourselves is displayed on our Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tosst to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Lofty words. We all learned to recite them in grade school.
When one looks closely without bias at Americans and American history, one is confronted with the reality thatAmerica has never been completely behind these lofty words. Many Americans have always sought to marginalize those within our society who looked or acted different, and deprive them of their alleged right to: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. Even as those words in the declaration of independence were being written, vast numbers of American citizens of color were embedded in slavery. Few at the time likely thought those words of equality applied to women or black people. That was just a given. No one other than white, land-owning men, were even allowed to participate in the creation of our nation. And despite the fact that America was established by mostly white European immigrants, first-generation immigrants have always had a very tough time integrating themselves into American society and being completely accepted regardless of their color. Racial and social bias has always been the norm in America, not the exception.
A Nation of Liars seeks to confront these uncomfortable truths for the purpose of motivating society to make the hard choices that may move us in the direction of complying with some of the lofty ideals we all grew up believing in. These are trying times and those choices will face great resistance from those who do not share these ideals. But we are involved in a struggle for our national identity and this is our opportunity to stand up for what we believe or surrender to the forces of darkness. The choice is ours.
