Patrick McNeill is the son of a Lincolnshire police officer. The Lincolnshire Police Authority employed him from 1958 to 1992. A Policeman's Tale tells the story of Patrick's life leading up to and through those years working for the police in the green ad rural county of Lincolnshire. They were years that saw considerable changes in the lifestyle of the people of the county and in the system of policing.

The story begins early in the Second World War and goes through to the second millennium, charting boyhood, schooldays, and working life. It includes something about the author's family and friends and a good deal about police work. A Policeman's Tale attempts to give a very personal taste of the routine nature of life in the police as well as the ups and downs, especially where something funny happened.

You will learn how a distinct lack of skill on the football field as a boy translated into Patrick being in charge of young people rock climbing, canoeing, mountain trekking and beach lifesaving. You will discover how Patrick's love of chocolate digestive biscuits became the cause of him lecturing American university students.
