Evil is masquerading in the halls of Parliament, and Sir Bertrand Thorndike is tasked with investigating from the inside. With his new position as a member of the House of Commons, he has access to the power brokers of English government. His tactic is to listen and learn, careful not to reveal his true motives, and he’s quickly inducted into the mysterious Theban Club.

Miss Philippa Cashel's mission, the Princess Charlotte Eleos School for Women in Need, is thriving with donations, and the students are learning skills to help them earn their livings in honorable ways. But when a dear friend's past is revealed by blackmail, Philippa must wrestle with the question, Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?

Bertie's and Philippa's missions collide when Bertie uncovers a dangerous plot involving vulnerable women. He and Philippa join forces against the corruption threatening to topple England's government, all while navigating their outward reputations and inward feelings for each other.

We listened to this next one in the series right away. It’s worth it to start with number one. The story gets better and better and the narrator creates such distinct voices. We loved it. Highly recommend.

Didn’t disappoint

Author = Great; Narrator = Horrible. Worst narration I ever heard. The main character was ok, but every one of the others all sounded like feeble old men - even the women. Book 1 in the series was great. I had to return it because it grated on my nerves.

Horrible Narration!

I found the narrator to be soothing and easy to listen to! Too many narrators try too hard to do complicated voices that sound like caricatures while this one had enough differentiation to help you follow the plot, but didn’t take you out of the story with jarring voice changes. This was an easy listen - would recommend!

Soothing narrator, kept my attention

I thoroughly enjoyed this installment of the series. It has a wonderful balance of intrigue and suspense. Seeing the relationship between Bertie and Pippa grow is fun and I appreciate that it is maturing more slowly than I typically see in books. I especially love the way the gospel is presented and demonstrated with these fictional characters.

Excellent story

Bertie’s reluctant plunge into politics, Philippa’s challenges at the Eleos School, and the gentle Christian themes all come together beautifully. The romance is such a delicious slow burn. The audiobook narrator does a nice unobtrusive job that lets the story shine. Highly recommend reading the series in order.

I loved this second installment!
