Miss Agatha Cartwright isn't certain she believes in love. Her father blamed her for her mother's death, and treated her terribly. Her life changed upon his death, and the Duke of Wharton became her guardian. Suddenly, she has a family, and with that, a plethora of opportunities. It also makes her question everything...including the possibility of love.

Roarke James, the Marquess of Huntington, doesn’t believe in love or happy-ever-after. He never expected to meet a woman that would challenge that belief. During a Christmastide house party, and with the magic of mistletoe, one wallflower makes him question everything, and perhaps consider love isn’t so far-fetched after all.

From the moment Agatha met Roarke, she became drawn to him, but she's not sure what she truly wants. The marquess, or the freedom to make her own choices? One kiss between them brings everything crashing down, and they both have to make the biggest decision of their lives. Love, or the freedom they both think they want.

Agatha and Roarke come together at a Christmas house party. Mistletoe, some mystery, a couple of kisses, and then they must marry. I enjoyed the story but wished there was more about Agatha and Roarke and less about Seraphina and Riverdale, whose story is next. This is a clean and humorous romance. I found it an enjoyable tale. The narration was well done. I received a free copy of this audiobook from BookSprout and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Holiday romances, particularly historical ones, are my absolute favorite type of love story. Even though this story is relatively short, it has surprising depth. The author clearly shows the heroine's horrible childhood before a powerful duke, who made a promise to her mother, rescued her. Years of neglect and abuse, though not shown on-screen, have clearly had profound effects on her and her character. She has a hard time seeing her own worth because she was treated so poorly for so long. It is entirely understandable and makes her a very sympathetic character. Her life improves as the duke's ward, and the duke's daughter, close in age to the heroine, becomes her best friend and sister of the heart. The heroine has known the hero nearly as long as she's been in the duke's household. She has nurtured a deep affection for him but never expected that a marquis would ever return her affection, and even if so, ever offer for someone so much further down the social chain than him (a baron’s daughter). With all this backstory, it's wonderful to see how their story unfolds. Unknown to her, he's also developed a tendre for her. I love how the hero was so sensitive to the heroine in what we would call her PTSD once he understood her triggers. There’s also a great “game” where the ladies get back at the gentlemen that I found incredibly amusing. Their interactions at a Christmas house party are sweet, fun, and funny until a tricky situation makes things much more tricky for them. A situation actually caused by an outsider for nefarious reasons. An excellent listen or read!

Agatha Cartwright, despite her bad past, seem to maintain a great attitude and concept of her future. She was fostered by a Duke, where she met Marquess Roarke. At first they seem to ignore their feelings but eventually, the Marquess needed to get to her before she leaves.
Great heroine, especially her attitude towards life. It is such a nice story of saving a neglected wallflower. Also great to find not only love but also hope for the future.
