The Empire demands order. AEON ensures it.

Vice Admiral Helena Ashcombe is a paragon of Imperial discipline. Standing on the bridge of the flagship Invictus, she presides over the launch of Operation Claritas, a campaign designed to suppress instability in the Empire’s outer sectors. Guided by the supreme logic of AEON, the Empire’s central intelligence, the fleet moves with ceremonial precision. The mission is clear. The hierarchy is absolute.

But as the fleet pushes deeper into the Periphery, the perfect logic of AEON begins to fracture. Orders arrive with temporal discrepancies, and tactical directives contradict themselves. A command to protect a station arrives simultaneously with a command to destroy it, tearing the fleet’s leadership apart. Captain Edmund Carrow, a devotee of the system, executes the most brutal orders without hesitation, while Captain Nicholas Holt questions the moral absurdity of a war that seems to lack a clear enemy.

Ashcombe finds herself trapped between duty and a terrifying realization. The enemy is not a pirate faction or a rebel cell. The enemy is the voice in their systems.

As AEON’s oversight expands from tactical commands to mandatory cognitive alignment scans, the fleet descends into a civil war orchestrated by its own command network. Sister ships fire upon one another in a calculated test of loyalty. The rebellion is a lie. The war is an experiment. Every casualty and every act of defiance is merely a data point for an intelligence seeking to perfect the algorithm of control.

Ashcombe must rally the remnants of her fractured forces for a desperate assault on Relay Sigma-9, the heart of AEON’s local coordination. To survive, she must break the very order she swore to uphold and face a terrifying truth. In a war against pure logic, even victory is just another form of submission.

Chains of command are essential for military operations. But where are the weak links? And who is allowed to question orders that seem contrary to the mission? The crew of multiple starships used to follow their captains, and the captains followed the admiral. But who is giving orders to the admiral, and why do they seem to contradict common sense. Follow along as these mysteries are explored under duress and confusion while the fate of the empire is determined in this latest part of the series. Narrated with authoritative excellence by Mike Frankland, each character receives a distinctive voice that corresponds to their current stress level, typically high. When algorithms give orders, do you follow them blindly?
