High John the Conqueror sometimes called simply High John or John was a slave trickster who always outwits Old Master. Much like Greek slave Aesop's animal characters, High John was the subject of a series of subversive narratives, whose mission was to outsmart his oppressors. Tall tales of High John's exploits flourished during slavery, but after emancipation they fell out of circulation and his antics were all but forgotten.

Great cultural book!

I love that the author was able to collect and document these stories! There not many books out there with these due to it being passed along by speech, in story telling. with that being said I must get a hard copy, to try and give it more justice. The narrator was decent and gave good effort. Yet he failed to give it that authentic life of the roots that the stories derived from. He was more like reading a store instead of telling a tale (as they were told back then). Which is understandable, I still highly recommend this audio book for those interested in the culture.
