In this darkly comic memoir, a young woman recounts the steps she took to rebuild her sense of self in the aftermath of two devastating strokes that robbed her of her ability to communicate.

Nina Mitchell was an accomplished Harvard graduate whose world changed forever when her facility with language - and much of her personality - disappeared. Lacking the tools to navigate her old life, Nina was forced to create another one. In After Words, she shares her remarkable journey as she slowly reclaims the power to converse, write, assert her identity, and to be herself - with words.

Nina Mitchell’s After Words is part of Missing, a collection of six true stories about finding, restoring, or accepting the losses that define our lives - from the mysterious to the inspiring. Each story can be listened to in a single sitting.

it doesn't happen to most people but for the select population that is Young and vibrant and lives through a debilitating medical situation like a stroke, it can be very frustrating. This is a very nice true to life story of someone who is experiencing that loss of words and Monumental change of life after such an event. Reeder was phenomenal.

I got this book free as part of a collection of short stories offered to Prime members (First Reads). I didn't know anything about it when I started listening. I don't like leaving negative reviews, so I am sorry to say that this wasn't a topic that interested me. Sometimes a topic can become interesting because of how it's delivered, and it subsequently engages you. That just wasn't me. I felt that the author tried too hard to find the perfect metaphors, and in many places it felt contrived. I'm really glad that she recovered so well, and I thank her for sharing her story.

Awesome story for everyone, but especially those who have suffered tremendous physical injury. It’s an uplifting account of how impressively the body can heal and recover, and how the new normal begins.

This isn’t a self-help book, but it will give you hope, and that’s enough for a spark.

A triumph for anyone with a broken body.
