The Human Federation of Worlds thought they were alone in the galaxy. But now an alien spacecraft has appeared over one of their distant mining operations. The frightened miners immediately call for help to deal with this worrisome first contact situation.

Admiral Streth is sent to implement talks with the aliens and to find out what they want. The aliens inform the admiral that they are called Hocklyns and are from a large multi-world trading federation. In truth, they come from an empire that is expanding through the galaxy and conquering world after world for slaves, and they have set their sights on the human worlds as their next conquest.

Aliens have been discovered and they are NOT friendly! The reptilian-like alien species known as Hocklyns in one of their medium-class warships came upon a mining community on a planet at the edge of the Human system. The miners went into panic mode calling on the military for help. Our main protagonist Admiral Streth in his capital line dreadnought Star Strike, along with several slightly smaller warships comprising his battle group, was called upon to investigate and protect the mining outpost. The Hocklyns communicated that they are trading envoys and wish to negotiate trading rights with the humans. Red flags are raised as it is quite suspicious for envoys to travel in warships. Regardless, a negotiating team is flown in and several meetings are conducted. Information is exchanged and evidently too much information is given by our negotiators. Quite abruptly the meetings are over and the Hocklyns return to their ship. The situation deteriorates quickly until shots are fired and all hell breaks loose. The Hocklyns warship is destroyed; evidently negotiations are over. An interstellar war has just begun! The Human Federation prepares for war and the arrival of the Hocklyns fleet. The coming battle will spell life or death for the Federation.

This is an excellent audio book that begins an interesting and imaginative saga. The characters are generally well developed. The story line flows smoothly and the "Slaver Wars" saga transitions well as the story develops. When this author passed away the world lost a master story teller.

An excellent book
