Already well-versed in the natural healing properties of herbs and oils, Jennie Pickett longs to become a doctor. But the Oregon frontier of the 1870s doesn't approve of such innovations as women attending medical school. To leave grief and guilt behind, as well as support herself and her challenging young son, Jennie cares for an elderly woman using skills she's developed on her own. When her patient dies, Jennie discovers that her heart has become entangled with the woman's widowed husband, a man many years her senior. Their unlikely romance may lead her to her ultimate goal - but the road will be winding and the way forward will not always be clear. Will Jennie find shelter in life's storms? Will she discover where healing truly lives?

Through her award-winning, layered storytelling, New York Times best-selling author Jane Kirkpatrick invites listeners to leave behind their preconceived notions about love and life as they, along with Jennie, discover that dreams may be deferred - but they never really die. Based on a true story.

I didn’t end up finishing this book. The main character is whiny or maybe it was the narrator. The love story was just kind of ick. The man is old enough to be the grandfather of the main character. The story wasn’t developed or deep. Often times with major events just smacking you in the face at odd times.

The author brings to life a story of a women who has and will go through so much, She does find love but so many people are against it. This has one of the saddest endings I have ever listened to, It is a true story and they almost never has a happy ending but the ending is sad but happy as well. It is a story that will touch your heart and make you want to cry. Tuff times along with children who aren't always the best, so much going on, what do you do when your husband divorces you in those times. It didn't say a lot for the women back then but you grin and bare it, make the best you can. I enjoyed it but was ready to cry at the end of it.

The narrator did a great job pulling the listener in, love her character voices, you always knew who was talking and what they were feeling. Her normal voice is lovely, it is a voice you don't get tired of listening to. There are no volume changes, no repeating of words and no background noises. It was truly a delightful listen that was very clear and enjoyable.

What a sad story

The voice of the narrator seemed to match the main character well and the narrator did a good job transitioning to other characters. This is what I anticipated life being like on the trail at this time and seemed like this could have been a real story.

Great Book
