The sexual revolution in America, which began in earnest during the 1960s and 1970s, has had profound and lasting impacts on society, culture, and morality. At its core, the sexual revolution was a movement that sought to challenge and overturn traditional views on sex, marriage, and personal freedom. What began as a rebellion against conservative social norms has now transformed into a society where sexual expression is viewed as a primary aspect of individual identity, and where biblical morality has increasingly been replaced by secular moral relativism. This shift has led to the idolization and near-worship of sex, along with a growing fascination with pagan practices, astrology, New Age beliefs, and the occult. As America moves further away from its biblical roots, it has embraced a worldview that elevates personal desire above divine commandments, creating a culture that is both spiritually and morally adrift.
The roots of America’s sexual revolution can be traced back to the social upheavals of the mid-20th century. Prior to the 1960s, American society generally adhered to Judeo-Christian values regarding sex and marriage. Sex was seen as something sacred, reserved for the marital bond between a husband and wife. The church played a central role in shaping societal norms, and the Bible was widely regarded as the moral authority on issues of sexuality, family, and personal conduct. Marriage and family were viewed as the building blocks of a stable society, and sexual activity outside of marriage was considered not only sinful but also socially unacceptable.
However, the cultural landscape of the 1960s was marked by rebellion against established norms. The rise of the counterculture movement, coupled with the feminist movement and the civil rights struggles, led to a questioning of all forms of authority, including religious authority. The development and widespread availability of birth control, particularly the birth control pill, played a significant role in liberating people from the fear of unintended pregnancies, thereby removing one of the major deterrents to premarital sex. This newfound freedom, combined with a growing emphasis on individualism and personal autonomy, laid the groundwork for the sexual revolution.
