In the eyes of legendary canoeist, Bill Mason, the South Nahanni River in Canada’s North West Territory is the finest canoeing river in North America. Other rivers may have more challenging white water, have easier accessibility, but when all things are considered, this remote water course, with its rich abundance of flora and fauna and scenic diversity, holds far more drama and romance. Running the Nahanni’s 530 kilometers from source to terminus, is an incomparable all round river experience. It is the centerpiece of the Nahanni National Park Reserve.
Some years ago, I paddled this river along with eight companions; a memorable and exciting odyssey, heightened by a surprise encounter with a rampaging grizzly bear.
