In the year 1210 of human time, a terrier dog, Jean, is involved in a fierce family feud over the inheritance in Heartlandia. He is condemned for the murder of his brother and is constrained to undertake a penitential pilgrimage in the Dark Land to avoid the death penalty. He is thus separated from his betrothed and sets off on a voyage with new companions, including a haughty, but beautiful Byzantine princess, Pandora, a white Persian cat, with an agenda of her own. Their travel plans are dashed when Jean and his companions are shipwrecked in the desert. They struggle to survive in a hostile environment during the trek to their destination. On the way, they are decimated by myriad threats and internal discord. Can the fellow travellers overcome their trials and tribulations to arrive at the promised land? Will Jean eventually return to his home in Heartlandia to claim his inheritance and betrothed?
An anthropomorphic allegory about the crusades, where five unique civilisations collide—the Latin West, the Byzantine East, the different strains of Islam, Nestorian Christianity and the Mongols. The results are unpredictable and explosive.
