The life and times of a girl who has always loved animals, or how I went from dreaming about Rin Tin Tin to having dogs, cats, chickens, fish, cattle, turkeys, and guinea fowl, with guest appearances by horses, lions, and canaries.

Editorial reviews

From childhood, writer Susan Orlean has maintained an undeniable love of animals, which she details in her creature-centric memoir essay Animalish. From the Westie puppy and butterscotch-colored mouse she had as a girl to the "Eggloo" she bought as an adult and filled with red hens that matched the hair of both her dog and child, Orlean's creature comforts are vast and varied. Narrated by Orlean herself in a manner that's both personable and affectionate, Animalish will reinforce in listeners a love for all things furred and feathered.

Definitely a sweet, short story about the author’s love of and for animals. Susan Orlean does a great job narrating her own book and writing about how she came to “collect” the animals she has.

Sweet

Thought this was a fast enjoyable listen that kinda reminded me of my sisters way of looking at things. I too adore animals more than humans but usually don’t accidentally get animals. I just care for them after they arrive at our little country place

Cute and funny

A short, sweet series of antidotes about acquiring animals. Funny, and very endearing, this story held my attention from beginning to end. It’s (almost) always a treat when authors read their own works, which was an added plus, in this case.

I just listened to an author interview with Susan, which is what brought me to this piece, in the first place, and I will definitely look up her other books.

A little gem for fellow animal lovers

As an animal lover I can easily identify with the author, including having a mother who thought animals were dirty, and wouldn’t let me have a dog. Broke my heart. Great narration by the author

A delightful little mini book
