It is 1959 in Wicklow, Ireland, and Annie and her cousin Sarah are living and working together to keep Sarah’s small farm running. Suddenly, Annie’s young niece and nephew are left in their care.

Unprepared for the chaos that two children inevitably bring, but nervously excited nonetheless, Annie finds the interruption of her normal life and her last chance at happiness complicated further by the attention being paid to Sarah by a local man with his eye on the farm.

A summer of adventure, pain, delight, and, ultimately, epiphany unfolds for both the children and their caretakers in this poignant and exquisitely told story of innocence, loss, and reconciliation.

Such a jewel of a book! I almost got the hard copy instead but am so glad I got the audiobook. The reader's performance gave an additional dimension to this exquisitely written book that was perfect. Usually when I listen to an audiobook something will strike me as "wrong;" it can be an accent, a pause, or a stress in the wrong place. Not one of these things troubled my listening.

Beautiful, lyrical, Irish

I loved the poetry, the simplicity, the self-awareness and heart of this imperfect woman. And the narration was perfect.

beautiful writing, beautifully read.

Wonderfully written, excellently performed, Annie Dunne is a great pleasure and a profound novel about aging and the many forms love and wisdom take.

This is vintage Sebastian Barry, perfect evocation of Ireland in late 1950’s, vivid characters. I was a bit confused at the lack of follow-up regarding a hint of possible child abuse. I listened to the book in only three sessions…kept me pulled in to what was going to happen next. Reminded me of my fave Barry book, Secret Scripture, one of my all-time top novels.

Inner voice of Annie

This book is beautiful to listen to. Thank you especially to The Reader. It could be that your sensitive interpretation elevated an already compassionate tale of humanity, richly described.

Splendid
