Protect the pride at all costs!

Exiled to another world, Marvin has carved out a place on it for himself and his mates. A visit from an otherworldly being puts his new and old planet in jeopardy. Marvin must use his connections and abilities to prevent his world from being consumed.

Secret societies, indifferent royalty, and the government that exiled him hamper his every move. With his capable and deadly mates standing firm with him against them and the alien threat, Marvin, as the Apex Shifter, will teach them all why the lion is the king of the jungle.

Apex Shifter 2 contains bloody fights, intrigue, and titillating situations with our Lion and his pride of mates.

Just as good as the first one. Doesn't revolutionize the genre or anything but it is entertaining anyway and that is all I really ask for to at the very least give a book a try.

Good

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

“Apex Shifter 1” was an interesting Isekai story with “emblems” that create portals allowing transportation between earth and another world: Kerxon. Kerxon is a primitive world of shifters, trolls, ogres and humans, taken from earth. Politics have made humans slaves to the shifters, and our MCs Marvin and Jessica resolve to improve life for the humans. Some shifters live covertly on earth, and the US government isn’t happy about that situation. Given a choice of being killed by the government or moving to Kerxon, our MCs decide to move, along with Jessica’s parents. And then….at the end of Book 1, an interesting twist is presented: events have been manipulated by an alien, seeking to help prevent aliens (conquering both earth and Kerxon.

With that cliffhanger in place, I was very interested in listening to “Apex Shifter 2” to see how that plot twist worked out!

As it turns out, the story doesn’t conclude with Book 2. Our MC and his mates continue to grow their family, help their village prosper, form alliances and work to convince corrupt kings to stop using humans as slaves. In addition, groundwork is laid for confronting the anticipated alien invasions in three years time.

I enjoyed the storyline of the political fights and alliances between the races and kingdoms of Kerxon. I also enjoyed the trip back to earth to collect Marvin’s best friend Terrell. I am confused, though, why all humans from earth that Marvin changes to shifters become lions, and why the alien Prophet wants Marvin to create more lions to battle the aliens. I suppose those answers will be provided in subsequent books; so far we haven’t yet had a direct appearance of the alien threat of the Hermix. Book 2 does, though, provide lots more of the Hermix’s shock troops the tentacled Thulus.

Much of the Apex Shifter story reminds me of a trilogy written by the author under one of his pen names, Ryan Eisenhower: Nebula Lord, The Frontier Tavern & The Master Crafter, and Trapped in Myriad Online. The author noted once that “in hindsight, probably shouldn't have tried the shared universe bit”, and I can’t help but wonder if “Apex Shifter” is his more recent effort to tell a similar story in a different way: by interweaving story lines into common books instead of separate books. “Apex Shifter 1” has shifters with an Apex MC trying to unite multiple races; “Nebula Lord” has sci-fi characters with an Apex MC trying to unite multiple species. In both, an advanced alien species is revealed that threatens their worlds/universes.

“Apex Shifter 2” continues the story of the MCs getting earth & Kerxon ready for the alien attacks; “Frontier Tavern” focuses on the efforts of Nebula Lord’s father getting his “universe” ready to aid in the efforts against alien attacks. If this sounds complex, it is. Both series are expansive in their efforts and take the reader/listener on a weaving path of adventures on multiple levels. My hope is that the author continues “Apex Shifter” to a satisfying conclusion; he left Eisenhower’s story unfinished.

“Apex Shifter 2” ends with quite the cliffhanger, and I’m tempted to get the Kindle version of “Apex Shifter 3” just to see how that works out. But no, I’m going to wait for the audiobook; the narrators are doing terrific jobs and I’d rather listen to the next adventure. Hopefully we won’t have too long to wait!

Two worlds, shifters, corrupt king, alien invaders

The author had a bit of issues with keeping track of time. He mentioned going hunting with the panther a year ago, while he was only on the new planet for a few months. Then later on earth mentions that the mc was on the new planet for a year while this was many months later. He also claimed that he was 7 feet tall, while the princess was only a few inches taller, then says she was 9 feet which was really confusing since this was before she could shift and his 7 feet hight is in his human form. To add to it at the end of book 1, the emblim merged into the mc's chest and the others vanished while still yet he has the emblim in his nightstand. It was a great story, the narration spot on but the author needs to firm up these inconsistancies to make the story a truely great one.

good but for a few inconsistancies.
