Baron Witherspoon, a disfigured WWI vet, works as a beat cop in a small Kansas suburb and is on a collision course with Jake Hickey, a volatile Chicago gangster. While Baron wants merely to provide residents with a safe place to live and escape the memory of the horrors of war, Jake is looking to recapture the glory of Prohibition.

Forced to hide out in Arkansas City, Baron’s town, Jake’s impatient nature drives him to put together his own gang. The local crime outfit is wary of Jake’s dealings and lack of cooperation. Baron has his own suspicions but can’t prove anything. A mutual acquaintance from the past, a dead war hero, holds a secret that raises the stakes even higher. Baron has too much to lose, but the town’s future is in the balance.

Ark City Confidential
: H.B. Berlow

As an almost but not quite life long Kansan, I love books set in this state. I'm not very familiar with Ark City, but I could imagine all of the characters going about their business in this prohibition era historical crime fiction. Baron the beat cop trying to keep his city on the up and up having to deal with big city mobsters like Crazy Jake. There is plenty of action and twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. I will look for the rest of this series.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Kudos to Bridger Conklin for good pronunciation. Nothing irritates me more than when a narrator

doesn't know his reading project. Most would have fumbled Arkansas City, but not this narrator!!! His voice fits they story!!!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
