Journalist Ben Mercer arrives in the fading coastal town of Avon Shoals to cover the demolition of a condemned Gilded Age resort. He expects a routine local interest story about urban decay. Instead, a tip from a county assessor leads him into the dark underbelly of the property. Hidden within the crumbling walls of the third floor is a canvas trunk belonging to a fifteen year old bellboy named Tommy Vale. Inside the trunk are a leather bound diary dated 1898 and a chilling ledger of names that someone was willing to kill to keep buried.

As Ben translates the sprawling handwriting of the past, he uncovers a horrific true crime atrocity orchestrated by the wealthiest families on the coast. Tommy and a fiercely determined maid named Eliza risked everything to document the violence enacted against the vulnerable people the town considered disposable. Their final act of defiance was hiding the evidence where the sea could not take it.

Now, a hundred and twenty eight years later, Ben is picking up the investigation where they left off.
