Courage comes in various forms. This small book contains a couple of nonfictional stories and one fictional story about courage. Heroes walk among us. Not all of them are given medals and parades, and some never tell others about their courageous acts.

Courage Remembered: A true story about a selfless nurse who saved the life of the author in the street after he suffered a severe motorcycle accident. With her courageous act, she saved not only his life – but those of his unborn children and grandchildren.

Change Came to Madison County: A true story regarding the dramatic changes impacting Huntsville, AL (Madison County) during the 20th century. A small cotton textile town became the center of NASA, and its population boomed to become a thriving city. The author remembers the courage of his father, a white man from Mississippi, who acted to defend a threatened neighboring African American family during the early 60s.

Elva Bevington – Navy Nurse: The author was blessed to have known an unsung heroine of WWII, Elva Bevington. She worked as a psychiatric nurse, helping those whose minds and emotions had been twisted by the horrors of war.

Courage Required: The fictional short story which became the basis for the author’s secular dystopian/Sci-fi novel Sins of Variance. The story takes place five hundred years in the future, where society is nothing like ours today. Society attempts to ban all variation because it has determined it to be the root cause of all problems. People are cloned, and love-based marriages have been replaced with the system joining a man with a woman to raise an assigned child. The main character finds that he has developed paternal love for this cloned daughter and he struggles to cope with this “personal defect.”

A Sense of Ichabod: This fictional story was roughly based on actual events, and it deals with the times in which the presence of God seems absent. What do you do when we absolutely feel spiritually alone in this world? In times of tragedy, people often feel abandoned by God. It takes courage to remain steadfast with God when it feels as if there is no use.
