“No stone goes unturned” (People) in this memoir by reality star Heather Gay, from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City and documentary series Surviving Mormonism, where she reflects on her departure from the Mormon Church and her unforeseen success in business, television, and single motherhood.

Straight off the slopes and into the spotlight, Heather Gay is famous for speaking the gospel truth. Whether as a businesswoman, mother, or television personality, she is unafraid to blaze a new trail, even if it means losing family, friends, and her community.

Born and bred to be devout, Heather based her life around her faith. She attended Brigham Young University, served a mission in France, and married into Mormon royalty in the temple. But her life as a good Mormon abruptly ended when she lost the marriage and faith that she had once believed would last forever.

With writing that is beautiful, sad, funny, and true, Heather recounts the difficult discovery of the darkness and damage that often exists behind a picture-perfect life, while examining the nuanced relationship between duty to self and duty to God. “An eye-opening firsthand account of religious indoctrination told with candor and sincerity” (Interview magazine), Bad Mormon is an unfiltered look at the religion that broke her heart.

If you grew up in the Mormon church, all of this should truly ring a bell! It was nice to hear a totally authentic and unfiltered retelling of what it’s like to grow up in Mormonism. Thank you, Heather, for ignoring the trolls and speaking your truth!

Relatable and honest

As a convert to the church after reading this it's nothing that dissuades my beliefs. But I do appreciate that how much she cares about her community and the people that she has employed that she went out of her way to. it feel like she need a change.

it's okay

I was a member of the Morman church for the first 23 years of my life attending Ricks College (back in the late 70’s) and at 23 years old was not ready to get married or serve a mission. I’d been to the LA temple to do baptism for the dead but never took out my endowments. I’m so grateful to Heather for “unveiling” what happens in those “secret” ceremonies. It answered many questions I’ve had for the second 23 years of my life. I’ve never watched any housewives shows and I’m now watching Housewives of SLC. Not a huge fan but I wanted to get to know Heather better. She is a strong and brave women. Thank You for your book. I too am a Bad Morman.

Loved this book, Religion trauma is SERIOUS. I can’t imagine being the less than for my whole life . I’m happy for Heather and for the stand she’s taking, I think it’s important with three daughters to raise. On the complete other side though the “friendships “ that are on the show are completely toxic & embarrassing, not at all what I want my 19 yo. to be seeking out . One last thing, I can’t believe the way she said people bow down to Mary Cosby . MC seems like a lost senior suffering from Alzheimer’s at a bad garage sale.

LOVED THE BOOK
