An investment banker arranges the purchase of a champion racehorse and gets caught up in murder in this New York Times bestseller that’s “fraught with violence, conspiracy and, of course, horses” (The Boston Globe).

Tim Ekaterin raised millions of dollars to finance the purchase of Sandcastle, a champion racer, only to discover an apparent defect in the horse. Investigating further, Ekaterin learns that the business of investment banking is nothing compared to the cutthroat world of horseracing—a world where violence and murder only raise the stakes....

I will put in a spoiler up front although it’s not very specific. A sine qua non is Dick’s main character getting beat up to the point of at least unconsciousness Twice per book. This time once is enough. There is however equivalent sorrow as always.
Fantastic plotting as usual but those knowing developmental anatomy will be about 3 hours ahead of the protagonist. Dick has to fib timelines to make the plot work, highly forgivable considering how much he gets right.
What I really like about all his books is that men are respectful and respected. That’s absolutely lacking in over 90% of modern books. Apparently modern publishers require…. Never mind….

Always a great story, but…

Although a little dated in a time period with phone boxes and floppy discs in computers, this was an enjoyable and satisfying listen. I learned a lot about stud farming, thoroughbred stallions etc through the eyes of Tim, a young merchant banker carrying the weight of a family name and legacy. There were some “didn’t see that coming” murders and nice twists. The characters straddled multiple facets of English life around 1980.

Enjoyable time spent in horse world
