Barely Breathing is the second book in the million-copy bestselling Breathing Series.

“I’ve spent most of my life trying to make it to a future that still hasn’t happened, or avoid a past that won’t let me go. I don't remember when I’ve ever just stopped to live in the present, to hold on to the seconds I’m in.”

Emma Thomas’s struggle with an abusive home life came to a heart-pounding conclusion in the final chapters of Reason to Breathe, the first installment of the Breathing Series - Rebecca Donovan’s bestselling romantic-thriller (USA Today). Now her secret life has been exposed, and her tormentor can’t hurt her anymore. Yet some are still haunted by that night. The bruises may have faded, but scars and fears remain. How will she reclaim her life when she’s barely breathing?

This book was as good if not better than the 1st book. I LOVE this series and will be recommending this to all my friends. Again I was so glad that I had already purchased book 3 before I finished book 2. Kate Rudd does a good job narrating too.

Another WOW!!!!!

Don't let the "YOUNG ADULT" genre, hold you back. This is a book, most definitely, written for all ages... well, tweens & up {puberty}. I say that for the depth of emotions & desire, as in sexual. However this author uses words, like an artist takes paint to a canvas. Saying exactly what needs to be said, & never going too far... & language too, is overall clean. Only the F word is used, & only rarely, when truly called for, in perfect context. Where if it were not used, the book would literally be ridiculous & lame. Instead, these books, {that should be read in order} feel real, come to life, & provoke deep thought. Shedding insight, that just under the surface of every person, there is a world's worth of something more. & should bring on, patience & empathy in each of us. Or at least, open our minds to all that may be underlying, as people do what they do. I won't rest now, till I get my hands on book 3... Last, but far from least, you <definitely> want to <LISTEN> to this book. I can't imagine, all I would have missed out on, had I read it on my own. Kate Rudd is awesome! & I think just as responsible for the success of this book, as the author...

Any additional comments?

This book describes the evolvement of Emma's life after the first book's horrific finale that literally took your breath away. Emma's struggles intensify as she finds herself in yet another less than ideal home environment when she decides to live with her mother until she goes to college. Her relationship with Evan is tested to the limit and suspense peaks by the end of story. I personally got exhausted by all her struggling but having read the series last book, I can claim that this drama prepares you for what comes next.

Struggle to the max!

When I started this, I expected to be disappointed-another young adult lifetime movie type novel. It is not that, not at all. This touched my codependent inner self in the most unexpected ways. I’m still thinking about it.

Not the Average Young Adult

You will have to start listening to this book thirty seconds after you finish book one because of the cliffhanger ending of Reason to Breathe.....make sure you have this book purchased before you finish book 1! This book is about Emma moving past what happened with her Aunt Carol and then trying to mend her broken relationship with her mom. She moves in with her mom. In a lot of ways the stuff that happens between her and her mom was harder for me to handle than the abuse in book 1. Her mom is volatile and still abusing alcohol and drugs, and I really wanted things to end up differently than they did. It was almost too much to imagine one person going through. It's heart wrenching and emotional.

Amazing Series, Love the Narrator
