Barely Holding On

Two lives could hardly be going in such starkly opposite directions.

Betsy Malone, twenty-two years of age, feels that she is leading an aimless life. She has a series of failed jobs on her record, along with two charges of driving under the influence, one of which resulted in her spending three days and nights in jail.

Now Betsy is about to begin yet another chapter in her life, having just begun working in a rather elegant downtown tavern in Columbus, Ohio. Her new boss is skeptical, having hired her as a favor to a friend, in the midst of a labor shortage. His expectations of the reserved young woman with long red hair are modest.

The life of Doug Carlson is nothing short of promising. The twenty-seven-year-old investment specialist has just recently begun a new, well-paying job in a prestigious financial services company in downtown Columbus.
For Doug, it appears that the sky is the limit.

At the same time, Doug has modest roots, not really wishing to be swayed by the trappings of the elegance his upswing in income could provide. But when he and some coworkers visit a tavern to have a drink after work, his gaze is immediately fixed upon the young redhead who comes to wait on them, to the perplexed glances and expressions of those in his company who see the shy and bespectacled Betsy as “mousy” and “nerdy”.

Regardless, Doug sees to it that he has the opportunity to sit down and talk with a skeptical Betsy, a young woman not used to having men of substance take an interest in her. With great candor, she tells Doug about her history, and her remorse over bad decisions that she seems unable to move past.

But a serendipitous turn of events results in her having to stay at Doug’s home overnight. And in an interesting discussion, she discloses what she feels would help her to instill a sense of direction in her life, something that was lacking in her youth. But will Doug be willing to provide her with guidance by way of a warm backside as she requests?
