Five star read/listen!!!

The first in the Whipped & Sipped series, Battered introduces us to this Chicago based cozy. Gotlieb deftly pulls us into the tight-knit community of condo neighbors and cafe employees. I would read this book just to spend time with the characters in the cafe and learn about vegan pastries, but the compelling mystery had me glued to the page. Jump in on this series!

Drama and murder in a close knit group

I loved Battered: A Whipped and Sipped mystery written and narrated by GP Gottlieb. Alene Baron is the owner of Whipped and Sipped, a Chicago cafe that serves healthy food and drinks. All she wants to do is create more menu items and raise her 3 children. Unfortunately, one of her neighbors and close friends is murdered and a second person is attacked. Alene is pulled into the investigation, and finds there are too many people with motives! Luckily, it means she can spend time with Det. Frank. I’m glad there are more books in the series. The narration is great, and brings the story to life. I received a free audiobook code for my honest review.

Narrator talks WAY TOO FAST

Story was pretty good but the narrator (which is the author) talks WAY too fast. They really should have hired someone else for the job. I listen to books all the time and have hundreds of books in my library and I have never had such a hard time. I kept having to go back and listen multiple times. Almost returned it but I was somewhat interested in the story so I trudged on.

Great Narration and story telling

Loved all of the Chicago references and the interconnected tight community of characters/suspects - I felt a part of the community. I did not agree with another reviewer’s comment that the narrator talked to fast - you can adjust the speed in the Audible app to whatever speed you like.

did not enjoy

The main character was immature and the plot was shallow. The basis for 'suspecting' many of the other characters was at times extremely far-fetched. It was hard to finish.
