Virtual voice is computer-generated narration for audiobooks.
A squad of space marines, Sarge and the Boys, are crippled after helping to evacuate a system in the path of the Karfu Horde. (Imagine a really immense, nasty bunch of alien attack crafts, then double their number.) Even after the story's narrator, Bucky, discovers a weakness in the enemy, the Boys have no time to exploit that find. Their role changes; they become the bodyguards for the Galacto-Torial fighting champ. The champ's next illegally staged bout is in the same system which is about to be overrun. How else can the promoters escape being shut down by the legal authorities, except by staging their event someplace the police don't dare raid? Such is the logic of the Tetra-League as described by the squad's pilot, Bucky. His story is augmented by a second editorial commentary by his buddy Lance, who kibitzes the action. This story is an action farce, an absurdist play with actors dressed in power combat armor. Technology has run amok and not only controls most every aspect of society, it fails at almost every aspect. The galaxy has become too complicated, especially in the battle suits of the troopers. Era Ten is set a thousand years in the future, a dystopia for those immune to the disease of model citizenship. "Battle Born: Worm Hole Pilot" uses characters and the setting of "Our Only Fear is Fear Itself" and "Jump and Die." You need not have read either to enjoy this story of the series.
