What does it mean to be an engaged American in today's divided political landscape, and how do we restore hope in our country? In a collection of "civic sermons" delivered at gatherings around the nation, popular advocate for active citizenship Eric Liu takes on these thorny questions and provides inspiration and solace in a time of anger, fear, and dismay over the state of the Union.

Here are 19 stirring explorations of current and timeless topics about democracy, liberty, equal justice, and powerful citizenship. This book will energize you to get involved, in ways both large and small, to help rebuild a country that you're proud to call home. Become America will challenge you to rehumanize our politics and rekindle a spirit of love in civic life.

Liked it from cover to cover. Narrator was well done and interesting. I enjoyed learning about the Civic University.

We should be eternally grateful to Eric Lou for planting this seed at the outset of Trump’s first term. Read, re-read, and practice what you find in this book daily. A necessary civics overhaul for every freedom-valuing American. “Challenge accepted!” Now, it’s your turn….

The author has hit upon correct ideas on engaging with people you disagree with and meeting in social spaces to discuss things. After that, the entire point of the story is obscured by the author’s obnoxious and persistent need to tell you how absolutely horrible, fascist, and racist the president elect of 2016 is. The irony does not seem to dawn on the author that it’s not possible to say all those things without inferring the same judgments upon Trump supporters, who he supposedly wants to be in communion with. Over the top Hitler and 1930s Germany, comparisons are not only unseemly from the author, but in the context of eight years time do not age well. It’s too bad the author didn’t read this book written by someone who seems to be truly practicing these beliefs.

Laudable idea destroyed by incompetent messenger
