Young, broke, in college.

What’s a girl to do?

Dive into this deliciously absurd and darkly humorous peek inside the world's oldest profession.

Told through a series of encounters with real clients, this unhinged nonfiction recounts the misadventures of a socially awkward college student as she fumbles her way through the salacious world of escorting.

While recalling unforgettable stories, Silversmith shares her unique insight into the business practices of call girl agencies and the everyday lives of American sex workers.

At times tragic, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, this is a book you won't be able to put down.

An interesting and seemingly honest portrayal of a call girl. Nicely sex positive stories but expressly different than sex for money and filled with dramatic intrigue. Machine gun tales share a wide variety of scenarios from sexy to gross to condescending to empowering and points inbetween. The perspective is that of a hard up hetrosexual college student who seems sickened by men so there are long chapters of her (perhaps righteous) contempt for her audience. I appreciated this and it defies what one might think is the appeal. At worst it avoids much introspection (in an epilogue the writer talks more about the effects of the work on her psychology but not as much throughout); rather telling long tales of nerdy dorks with body odor or religious hypocrites. The tone is of sarcasm and comedy, while the experiences seem believable it is the stuff one might expect without a lot of bombshells but a robust parades of amusing antidotes. It does a decent job of being cautionary and still 'fun,' the author is an empowered hero of her story even when it is sometimes grimy even to her (and she acknowledges the potential for danger without being shaming or preachy). To be honest I've struggled with sexuality at times and was hoping for something a bit more insightful or deep at times but ultimately I found it to be a colorful and interesting look at a rainbow of sexuality. The perspective seems refreshingly feminist and the author even has moments of disbelief that some other women have struggled more than she is, it does not sheen over grit or danger with escorting. While it is a modern tale the primacy of the internet today makes the accounts here (mostly booked through an agency) feel a little more 'old world' unlike the sort of 'sex work' I might expect in 'today's world.' The narration goes well with the material having an indie girl next door flavor.

Wow! Some people are acclaimed conversationalists, either by trade or naturally gifted. When someone with this talent sets out to put their exquisitely raw history into a collection of stories, us readers and listeners are in for a special treat. Calling the language gritty or authentic doesn't seem to do it justice, as each word and description feels exactly like re-living someone else's memory. Allow yourself to be transported to a different place, wearing someone else's shoes, and experience this journey of hardship, hilarity, and occasional abject horrors that make up the typical and atypical call girl life. Narration by Kayla Barber was absolute perfection, in every way. Wow, again, for good measure. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 1.75x.]

I highly recommend this book. These memoirs took me on an adventure unlike anything I’ve experienced. The author is a self made business woman, and is more than meets the eye.
