Joe Gunther is sent to the neighboring town of Bellows Falls to investigate harassment allegations against a fellow officer. But as Gunther doggedly pursues the truth, what begins as a seemingly open-and-shut case starts to look more and more like a frame job, and he soon finds himself feeling around the edges of a statewide drug distribution network.

As always, Vermont itself is a major character in Mayor's writing, with Bellows Falls standing in for any number of slowly decaying, once-proud mill towns.

Bellows Falls was my favorite character in this one. I hope he can go back there at some point, and find it came out of the doldrums okay.

A story that simmers, rather than boils.

This series is great when you want to have a mystery with a humble character that makes mistakes but trudges forward.

Awesome as always

The narrator rocks the house down! The author and narrator team rule the audiobook mystery world without question. I like how believable the characters are and how seamless the transition from standalone book to standalone book and yet they are so interconnected that you really can’t grasp even the individual characters fully without knowing their past(books). If Brattleboro was a real town it would certainly be on my vacation wish list and a stop at the police department to actually meet our star would be incredibly high on the “to do” list! I feel like I would even have an understanding of the layout and could find the best eateries just by listening to the descriptions! Originally this series was suggested to me by audible and I’m indebted! If you like a good mystery and like to try to guess the story ending, good luck! You really need to hear it for yourself.

Another great listen

As I move forward in listening to the eighth in the series of Joe Gunther mysteries, I stopped to assess the appeal. In all honesty, I see the stories as a welcome diversion from my usual fair of political thriller pot burners, smart ass cop dramas (Lucas Davenport, you know who you are), and a guy wandering the country only to find trouble at every stop. Joe Gunther is a hard nosed police veteran who mostly makes good decisions in his efforts to solve crimes. Along the way, we get to go inside his head to discover what makes a good investigator tick and how to manage the obstacles in the way of solving the crime presented. Good stuff all around.

With Bellows Falls, Joe is called upon to investigate a case in a nearby town where a young policeman finds himself sidelined as a suspect in the wrongdoing. Joe does his best to get to the truth, and, hopefully save a young cops career in the process. Before long, as usual with any Gunther story, he uncovers a lot more going on than he has bargained for when first called to investigate. As one would expect, Joe works his way through all the obstacles and gets to a satisfactory conclusion.

Tom Taylorson continues to do a great job narrating with his gravel voiced rendition for Gunther and various other voices that are called for in the telling. He has great pacing and easy to listen to his words filling my ears. I continue to thank Audible for placing these terrific Joe Gunther stories on the Plus Catalog page. Thank you. I am moving forward in placing the next Joe Gunther novel in my library and will listen with glee in due time.
