Benny Shaw, a sports-obsessed, carefree kid, is convinced that he can take on the world - until he spends the summer living with his grandfather and meets resident tomboy and all-around tough-girl Babe Meara. Benny may be a wise guy, but Babe is at least three steps ahead of him, especially on her territory. When a money-making business venture arises, however, Babe just might consider Benny as her partner, and possibly as a friend. But things become complicated, and dangerous, when the troublesome Furty Howlin starts clamoring for a slice of the action.©2007 Eoin Colfer (P)2007 Scholastic Inc. Editorial reviews

The sarcastic, roguish lad Benny Shaw meets his match in the headstrong tomboy Babe, whom he befriends while vacationing on the Irish coast in Eoin Colfer's uproariously funny and briskly paced character study, which finds the titular characters pitted against Furty Howlin, the town menace who quickly becomes their bitter rival.

Irish slang and colloquialisms abound, and Euan Morton's lively, impassioned performance pulls off an impressive balancing act, lending a sense of authenticity to this distinctly Irish tale while also imbuing it with a sincerity that gives this coming-of-age yarn a universal appeal.

This book sort of crept into being, we found it while Airman seemed to get more promo, ( also great)Colfer doesn't dissapoint, nor does the narrator. Wonderfully fast paced well told, quippy and witty. Benny is at that tender turning point in development, toys, sports, girls, and all the angst that comes from the above. My 11 year old has listened to it repeatedly, and its got to be good for him to do that.

a sleeper for colfer
