In a Serer village nestled north of the Gambia River, life flourishes in harmony with nature and spirit. Dembe, a revered hunter and spiritual leader, awakens with his family in their earthen hut, unaware that the final day of their world is beginning.

As drums sound and rituals stir the village in sacred rhythm, Dembe leads a spiritual hunt, offering reverence to the animal spirits. That night, under moonlight, celebration ignites—songs rise, feet wrestle in ancient Laamb, the stars above bearing silent witness. But as dawn nears, evil rides the ocean.

A Portuguese galleon anchors unseen offshore—its crew cruel, greedy, and thirsting for flesh. Rich pearl beds in the Americas have bled the Caribbean native populations dry. Now, the slave traders arrive with a savage mandate: capture the strong, kill the rest. No witnesses. No mercy.

The raid is swift and monstrous. Fire consumes homes. Screams rend the sky. Dembe’s youngest son is slain before his eyes. He, his wife Moussane, and their surviving child are shackled, marched to Goreé Island—the infamous portal to bondage. Dembe watches mothers torn from babes, girls brutalized, and broken souls cast into darkness.

Shipped across the Atlantic in chains, Dembe's body weakens, but his spirit burns. On the cursed island of Cubagua, where pearls shimmer red with blood, he meets a stranger with the same unbroken fire—Charaima, the last Guaiquery chief.

Together, they will resist. But first, Dembe must survive the abyss of despair.
