Father Martin, the priest of St. Mary's Catholic Church, is suddenly having gruesome, horrible nightmares so real they transport him back several years into the jungles of Vietnam when he was a 'tunnel rat' for the army. His job was hunting down enemy soldiers and engaging in hand-to-hand combat to the death in dark tomb-like tunnels with his partner, Cody.
When Martin's nerve broke after a bloody battle with a soldier who refused to die, Cody carried him out of the tunnel, and Martin was invalided out of the army and sent home to recover. Martin joined the church, became a priest, and was sent to St. Mary's in Chicago.
The resurgence of the horrific dreams coincides with a series of murders committed close to the church. Four parishioners, after making their confession, are slaughtered by a killer using a bayonet, and Martin becomes a suspect. Has Father Martin become a psychotic serial killer, or is someone stalking his confessors?
