Blue Genes Laced in Rhema (ῥῆμα) Spoken Words by Reneé Drummond-Brown blends theological and biological philosophies into existence. As a decorative element the book cover touts the back pocket stitching with arcuate patterns that holds the card (Ace of Spades) to the black cultures’ future. The vertical lines and stanzas that run alongside the ins-and-out of the poetry book are referred to as inseam and out-seam stitching respectively and tightly woven. The chain stiches because of slavery’s’ connection painfully used for leg seams and waistbands are reinforced regions of tension for African Americans.

Drummond-Brown’s play on words, imagery and artistic literary work is stitched together in rational thinking with spiritual belief, laying the groundwork for religion and reason to coexist through poetic prose. The vernacular in this tome speaks of unwavering faith. The word “rhema,” means “spoken word” or “utterance” in Greek used in Christianology. The idea alludes to intimate revelation from God obtained through Bible study, prayer, worship and/or fellowship. Faith arises from hearing and hearing by God’s word (rhema). Black Americans’ high levels of religious activity and dedication in relation to their faith-walk, path and beliefs are well established within their holistic beings.
