As the hockey captain, I win games and never lose control.

Until I see my father in the stands.

He should be in prison and nowhere near me, so the moment I spot him, I suddenly can’t breathe.

I leave before anyone can see me falling apart, rushing straight to the place where I know no one will find me.
All too late I realize I’m not actually alone.

A girl with breathtaking dark eyes stares at me. But instead of taking out her phone and getting exclusive footage, she helps me through my panic attack.

We strike a deal.

In public, I don’t know her.

In private, she’s the only thing that keeps me grounded. She knows how to pull me back from my worst moments, and I know how to make her forget she deserves more than being my secret.

I tell myself it’s just a temporary solution to a temporary problem.

But every time I step onto the ice, I’m looking for her in the crowd.

And if she ever realizes she’s more to me than a distraction, I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep pretending I don’t want her.
