A string of suspicious deaths near a small Michigan town ends with a fall that claims the life of Emma Gentry's boyfriend, Daniel. Emma is broken, a hollow shell mechanically moving through her days. Now she restlessly wanders the town, haunting the cemetery and its white-marbled tombs, feeling Daniel everywhere. When she encounters newcomer Alex Franks, she's intrigued despite herself. He's an enigma, melting into shadows, preferring to keep to himself. But he is as drawn to her as she is to him.

He is strangely familiar, from the way he knows how to open her locker when it sticks, to the nickname she shared only with Daniel. The closer they become, though, the more something inside her screams there's something very wrong with Alex Franks....

A modern spin on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein where a young couple's undying love and the grief of a father pushed beyond sanity could spell the destruction of them all.

Would you try another book from A. E. Rought and/or Katie Fenton?

Possibly.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I haven't read Frankenstein, so I can't comment on how faithfully this retelling jives with that book. It starts out good. Everything's pretty obvious but that didn't bother me until the end when I was like "Really? Can't you figure this out?" And there's a sex scene (sort of) that just gets slipped in, which felt like unnecessary filler given its placement. I would have liked to see more character development, especially of Dr. Franks, and less angst (it grows exponentially as the story progresses). The book is high on love story and low on plot, so much so that the ending feels way too rushed. The creep factor wasn't played up enough. In spite of all that, I'm not sorry I listened to the book and will probably do so again.

Any additional comments?

I'm not one for writing Audible reviews, but I don't think this book deserves its current 2 star rating. Hence my review.

Interesting but Not Perfect (Spoilers Ahead)
