The “definitive” (The New York Times) biography of film legend Bruce Lee—the martial arts icon who made kung fu a global phenomenon, shattered Hollywood stereotypes of Asian and Asian American actors, and became one of the most influential pop culture figures of the 20th century.

Forty-five years after Bruce Lee’s sudden death at just thirty-two, journalist and bestselling author Matthew Polly delivers the authoritative account of his extraordinary life and legacy. Meticulously researched over a decade and informed by more than one hundred interviews—including with Lee’s family, friends, colleagues, and the actress in whose bed he died—Bruce Lee is both sweeping and intimate.

Polly traces Lee’s evolution from Hong Kong child star to troubled teen, from charismatic martial arts teacher to trailblazing Asian American actor navigating a whitewashed Hollywood, to international superstar in Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury, and The Big Boss. He explores Lee’s family dynamics, his struggle to break through in the US entertainment industry, his intense work ethic, and the enduring mystery surrounding his untimely death.

Dispelling myths and revealing the man behind the legend, Bruce Lee is a deeply humanizing, page-turning biography of a boundary-breaking actor, father, fighter, and icon whose cultural impact endures across generations and continents.

I didnt know much about Bruce going into this, id seen videos of him playing ping pong with nunchucks and that famous video of him saying to be like water. This in depth book about Bruce gives great insight to who he was as a person. From his early childhood to his early death, you get to see him mature into the person we all admire now. He's human, this books shows that. He wasnt perfect like we love to think he was, but he did his best and thats what transformed him into who we know now. I also learned a lot about how people from all walks of life face certain discrimination and hardships in life, including Bruce himself. All in all this was a captivating book into the life of Bruce Lee.

As a ten-year-old when Bruce Lee died, his life greatly impacted my life. As we grow up, we seek to identify and connect with those qualities and virtues embodied by those we adore. I too grew up in a tough neighborhood. The way out for Bruce was to go through it until he was sent to America as a way out. Over the years I've read almost every book and picked up dozens of Hong Kong magazines on Bruce, but of late only Unfinished Business and by a greater margin, Bruce Lee: A Life, was I finally able to see clearer who Bruce Lee the man, really was. While I was familiar with 70% of the book, the level of detail and personal accounts brought me so much closer to the person. It's one thing for a person to be ten-feet tall after their death, but Bruce was an enigma to those who knew him personally. Thanks Matt, for reintroducing someone I thought I knew, whose life mattered beyond his dreams, and whose reach eclipsed his highest aspiration. Bravo!!
