Teaching, leading and learning are at the heart of every school and classroom. Our ability to grow and adapt to the ever-changing landscapes of education is what keeps our profession and ourselves moving forward. In Buddy, Bully & Beacon, we see how different personalities are drawn to various styles of teaching and leading. We examine archetypes and examples from pop culture to better understand how we can and must evolve.
From Charles Dickens to Charles Darwin, people have been seeking to illustrate how change happens as a result of stimulus from our environments. Teachers and leaders have the ability to shape their own surroundings and impact those of countless others, for generations to come. During my time in education, I have seen and made countless examples of evolutionary missteps that slowed my own development until conditions such as habitat, experience and my own maturity were better suited for survival. I hope to share these with you so that your own journey may have fewer roadblocks, more signposts and an illumination from within that may help light the way.

The structure and insights provided made me pause and think critically about my role in the classroom, my relationships with students, and the lasting impact of my methods. This book didn’t just inform me—it inspired me. I walk away from it with renewed motivation and several actionable ideas to strengthen my teaching and student engagement.
Not many books can encourage me to reevaluate how I teach after 25 years of teaching but this book did just that.
