When severe weather uncovers a grave in the forest, Trooper Johnny Lister is shocked to discover it’s the body of her long-lost uncle, Gabriel Lister, who disappeared nineteen years earlier. Now she must not only deal with her father and his spiteful family, but she also learns that the police of nineteen years earlier did not investigate Gabriel as a missing person. Now she must conduct her investigation without either groundwork or case notes to draw from.

Johnny initially focuses on Gabriel’s prison sentence for drug trafficking, which his family claims was unjust. As she tracks what happened to her uncle on his last day alive, though, she feels there may be something else at play, and an old letter from the halfway house where Gabriel once stayed suggests his drug charges may have had nothing to do with his death.

As Johnny struggles to achieve the familial relationship she’s secretly always wanted, she works to discover who hated her uncle enough to bury him alive. But, in an unexpected turn of evidence, she not only realizes that she may have been a witness to events that led to Gabriel’s disappearance, but she also learns that Gabriel may not be the only victim buried alive by this killer.
