How much money would it take to send your own brother to the dungeons? Wyl-hunter, Brutus, is in hot pursuit of his elusive sibling, Otis. With a bounty dangling over his sibling's head, Brutus, the thief-taker, must vow to bring his own relative to justice for the much-needed reward money.

Along his mysterious journey, he finds himself in the midst of Brute Fest, a violent festival where blackened eyes and vicious brawls are things to be celebrated. His trip takes an even more intriguing turn when he becomes enraptured by a stunning beauty, Violet. Captivated by the wild world around him, and Violet's unusual talents, Brutus must make an impossible choice between love, money, and family.

Sure to quench your thirst for adventure, Call of the Wyl is a brand new fantasy standalone novella with a hint of paranormal romance set in the Isle of Destoria. Brought to you by the author of From Ashes and Desdemona in Embers (the first two installments of the acclaimed Illuminator Saga) and co-written with romance author, Aurora Alba.

Note: You do not have to read the other books of the series to enjoy Call of the Wyl, however, if you have, you will find a treasure trove of hidden references and backstory to some existing characters you've come to know and enjoy.

I haven’t read/listened to any of the other books in this series so wasn’t sure what to expect from this one. I received this free, in exchange for an honest review. I know this is a short novella in an already established world. As it’s supposed to be able to be enjoyed without reading the others, I felt like there wasn’t enough background on the world for me to really get what was going on with the plot beyond the overall series of events. This made the plot somewhat simplistic and hard for me to get invested in the characters.

The beginning put me off with all the grammar correcting by the characters. I think it was supposed to be funny, but without knowing the relationships and rapport between the characters, it just came off as annoying. I also struggle with modern swearing in fantasy worlds, which was basically the intro to the book.

Thankfully, the books seemed reasonably well edited, so I was able to get through it. I DNF a lot of books when the writing/editing is poor.

I think this book may appeal to a different type of reader, but it just wasn’t my style.

Maybe if I’d read the other books first…

Interesting story, well narrated and fun to listen to. It’s not a long story so a good one for an evening of listening while puttering about. Appropriate for older children. I enjoyed the story. I was given it in exchange for a review.

Loved this! It was definitely a wholesome romance that killed my boredom! The writing was smooth and fast paced keeping me engaged while not taking from the overall story.

Definitely tugged at some heart strings near the end but overall got me smiling. Witty humor, and memorable characters. This was a great read that made me feel good. The narrator was well chosen too!

I'll definitely be listening again the next time I feel down!

A light story
