“A Doc Ford novel has more slick moves than a snake in the mangroves. In Captiva, Randy Wayne White takes us places that no other Florida mystery writer could hope to find.”—Carl Hiaasen

Randy Wayne White is acclaimed as "wildly inventive" (The San Diego Union-Tribune), "a wonderful writer" (Paul Theroux), "a fine storyteller" (Peter Matthiessen), and "the rightful heir to John D. MacDonald" (The Tampa Tribune-Times). Now he delivers a wicked thriller that sends government agent-turned-marine biologist Doc Ford into dangerous new waters, as a Florida fishing dispute escalates into a deadly war that reaches across the ocean...

Critic reviews

Praise for Captiva

“The thriller Captiva is a lot like fishing...you are...caught!...One of the more dramatic finales in mystery fiction. White tellsone whale of a story.”—Miami Herald

“An enticing brew of hard-drinking, thick-skulled anglers, plodding detectives, and plotting marina bosses. White knows a thing or two about friendship, love, and honor. He also knows it’s possible for neighbors who share the same small island to appreciate and understand each other so little.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Edginess is what sets White’s work apart from the pack....A prickly, enigmatic hero...Ambience, compelling characters and straight forward suspense.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Nice story with characters you don't run into very often in the books you read. George Guidall was superb as always. It was well worth the credit.

Enjoyable

Randy Wayne White continues to weave the great tale. he includes elements of Florida history that most people don't know and this particular book about net fisherman and the conflict between them and sports fisherman. he brings to light some interesting backwoods characters the continue to make his novels both entertaining and educational. he has enough plot twists to keep you guessing. the audio performance is good and it's different than reading it helps you really feel the story in a different way.

another good story

Love Doc Ford tales of South Florida culture and community of the area. Enjoy the weaving of crime mystery and thriller into a great escape and biological education along the way. George Guidall is no Dick Hill. I focused too much on the inarticulate mushy delivery and lack of individual voice character development that Hill mastered. It was a level of escape and engagement that I missed in this reading. Hope someone new performed the next books Hats off to voice artist Dick Hill. RIP. Thanks for the many many journeys in all the genres.
