At age 55, Carla Laxley is divorced and aimless.
Her parents are in their 70s and the owners of a prosperous company that they would like for their daughter to assume the leadership of so they could retire.

However, Carla is without ambition and just does enough to get by to draw a salary from the family business. At the same time, she expects to simply be handed the company in the future.

In a surprise meeting with her parents, she is told that Laxley is in a position to buy a rival company, and she is asked to prepare the proposal for the purchase and merger.
