Editorial reviews

English author William Hope Hodgson first published his spooky supernatural Carnacki the Ghost Finder serial detective stories in 1910. One of these tales, Carnacki the Ghost Finder: Gateway of the Monster, narrated with creepy macabre delight by Britain's David Ian Davies, eerily tells of Carnacki being confronted with an angry and powerful spirit within the haunted halls of an old mansion that was also the site of three brutal murders. It ends up being one long night for the both of them. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will certainly appreciate.

Not a bad little yarn, and it helped to have the spooky parts about the monster and that poor cat.

Narrator was okay - All-in-all, Not a bad way to kill an hour! 😎

An Okay Ghost Story...

I read the whole story collection as a teenager I found them in many ways the most horrific horror stories I ever read. The stories stick in the mind.

Now, after a decade or two of watching paranormal investigations ( some of which are clearly simply fictional too) I find parallels between the Ghost Finder’s attempts to investigate paranormal phenomena and the modern day Ghost Hunters - an aspect that enhanced my enjoyment! The narration is OK but the accents get annoying.

Still disturbing

I just discovered William Hope Hodgson, and my life has been greatly improved.
I will now hunt down everything he's ever written and read/or listen to it.

This audio book is one of his very best tales, and is read by an excellent narrator. Yes, a little short, but oh so well packed with delicious haunted detective details.

I "MUST" read/listen.

I didn't drop a whole credit. I plunked down the few $'s - and I'm a happy buyer.

One of the best ghost stories ever written

I haven't read any stories about Carnacki the Ghost Finder, but character is definitely unique in the way that he uses magic and occult knowledge in order to thwart the supernatural threats - not what I was expecting! Carnacki is a forgotten detective. He's just as smart and brave as Sherlock Holmes is. But instead of solving regular mysteries, he solves supernatural mysteries. Using some cool devices to help him in his cases. David Davies did a good job in narrating this short story, and the price is right - check it out!

Short but a good fireside tale!!

I'd been looking for the Carnacki stories for a while on audible, and seeing as this is the only one currently available I feel perhaps I had to work with what I got, but not too bad if you ask me. The story is wonderful, Carnacki is rather like a supernatural Sherlock Holmes, and though the performance was a little lacking in quality that, along with the narration, gave it an air of an old radio horror anthology program. It's not terribly expensive at all, so even if you don't like it you won't waste much money, but I rather enjoyed it. A good start, but I would like to see more of the Carnacki stories available on audible in the future.

Short, but a treat
