Dead men tell no tales

When Corporal Kaylin Neya is assigned front desk duty—a task hated by every Hawk—the only thing she can look forward to besides an endless stream of complaints is visits from a dotty old woman. She always brings baked goods along with information passed on by her friends…who happen to be ghosts no one else can see. But then the old woman’s invisible friends have news about Severn Handred: his unusual weapon has caught their attention. Concerned, Kaylin accompanies the woman home because she has a few questions to ask these so-called ghosts.

Sadly, Kaylin can also see them. And she can see other spirits in the woman’s house as well—four children who’ve been trapped there for decades. When Kaylin looks into the deaths in the records at the Halls of Law, something doesn’t add up. Factor in a building that isn’t supposed to exist, and nothing makes sense. But Kaylin is a Hawk, and she’s determined to free the trapped ghosts of the children, even if she’s suddenly landed in the middle of the bad kind of Barrani history. Someone doesn’t want the past to be uncovered, and they’re perfectly willing to destroy Kaylin if it preserves the secrets of the dead…

“A satisfying combination of contemporary-feeling secondary world, city-based fantasy, and go-big-or-go-home epic.” —Tor.com on the Chronicles of Elantra series

Continuation of this series is excellent as all the books in the series. No foul language. No bedroom situation.

I love this series and am grateful that I can now listen to the books. This author is amazing, and the narrator is great as well. I am so excited for the next book in the series.

A heart warming story

No character development and no progression in the overall story. You can skip to the next novel without missing anything. I love the previous novels and hope the next will be better.

Disappointed

Possible Spoilers:
Corporal Kaylin Neya takes her turn manning the front desk at Hawk Tower while her partner, Corporal Severn Handred is attending to other Halls of Law business. Citizens entering the tower state their business and are directed to the appropriate areas. A regular daily visitor is Mrs Erickson, who brings baked goods along with her observations. When she talks about Severn’s glowing belt, and her special friends that other people can’t see, she has Kaylin’s full attention. She feels Mrs E’s ghostly friends who are concerned about Severn’s belt may still be alive, but the children in her home are definitely dead. 💀
When an investigation into the oddness of the property brings up the name of Azoria An’Barannan, Teela wants any investigation dropped. But alarms are raised:
At the High Halls with her status of outcaste and her line excised. With her old rooms that are warded to the extreme.
At the Imperial Palace with the possession of a dragon.
At the Academia with AAB’s past history as a student driven to learn many alarming areas of study.
With the mysterious larger building owned by AAB overlaying Mrs E’s home but is phased out.
Insidious doesn’t begin to describe her machinations and the tentacles she developed over multiple areas and dimensions.
Hvam does a decent job of narration.
