For generations, the clans of ancient Scandinavia have lived in fear of a legend made flesh—a divine and supernatural force known only as the Wild Hunt. It descends without warning upon gatherings of people, indiscriminately slaughtering anyone too slow, too unprepared, or too brave to run. Astrid of Clan Lodjur was only a child when the Hunt came for her people. One day when the clans gathered to finally name their first king, the Hunt descended upon them. Although her mother and father escaped the carnage, Astrid's mother was fatally wounded. The memory of her mother’s final words, and the indifference of her clan in the aftermath, has haunted her ever since. While her father forbade her from pursuing vengeance, she trained in secret—honing her body, her will, and her rage.

The cycle—always precise, always deadly—has been broken. Never once in all known history has their cycle of attacks been broken, and none but Astrid want to know why.

A ship from Saxon England is wrecked off the Swedish coast by an unnatural storm. He has been following tales of the Wild Hunt across Europe, and what he’s uncovered changes everything. There is more to the Wild Hunt than the legends of oral lore and paranormal superstition. Its hunger is growing, and the broken cycle is cause for concern that there may be more to the attacks than just random coincidence.

Reluctantly, Astrid and Andrew form an alliance—one driven by vengeance, the other by knowledge. Together, they will face ancient magic, hostile clans, and truths buried in blood-soaked history. But their foes both known and unknown, are plentiful and everywhere.

As Astrid and Andrew peel back the layers of myth and memory, they will be forced to confront not just the Hunt, but the terrors of the past within themselves. Because some legends are not meant to be understood.
