The chayote squash is a gourd that is originally from Mexico. It is sometimes called mirliton or chocho. It is very popular in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States where the neighboring town of Bywater holds the annual Bywater Mirliton Festival every year. Hurricane Katrina almost wiped out the mirliton in the area, but efforts have been made to revive the tasty bumpy squash in the area and it once again thrives.
