This biography of Chester Arthur is a fascinating look at a man who, thrust into the highest political office, exceeded expectations and left a lasting mark on history.

This is a straightforward history of Arthur and his times. Refreshing in a day of historical revisionism, this book gives an honest, fair look at the culture of the era (1870-1900). No mess, no polemics - just an interesting and informative narrative!!!

Two thumbs up

This was disappointing. Mostly a review of the late 19th century in the US, this read more like a wiki article than a scholarly biography. Yes I'm aware Arthur burned his papers, but so little insight from others. Example, a lengthy rundown of all the actors who have portrayed the OK Corral participants over the years.
Also, the narration was extremely uneven with the narrator repeatedly pronouncing "Congregational" (the denomination) as "congressional".
Finally, every single person mentioned had a parenthetical birth / death date mention. Really distracting.

Mostly NOT about Arthur
