Child of the South

Would you consider the audio edition of Child of the South to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the book, so don't know. I enjoy listening and can do that while driving, don't often get the chance to set and read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eugenia...she was the main character and easy to follow. A strong, opinionated, caring woman that many of us , including myself, would like to be.
It gave a vivid insight to what the south was like in the days following slavery and how hard the black had to work to become free and have a voice!
There were parts that were a few times I got lost in trying to follow what was going on...but for the most part, it kept my attention.

What about Karen White???s performance did you like?

She did and great job narrating.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, just thought provoking, wondering how I would have felt about the black during this time period and, would I have been that cruel??

Loved it

I enjoyed this novel very much and would recommend to others happily. Felt like I was there during the 1860’s and got a better understanding of what happened around and after emancipation

North Carolina, Old South

Was not sure of this book at first and started to listen to it and could not set it down till it was ended. First being from North Carolina the cities mention I knew and had lived there or just been in the area. Salisbury, NC was approximately 15 miles from my home. So if you are a lover of books about the Old South before, during and after the civil war I highly recommend this fictional history and like myself you want be able to put it down.
The war is over and the southern states are bankrupted and many of the whites and blacks are starving and have no money to continue on and like many are at the end of their ropes. Some commit suiside, leave the country and die there and most of the locals are dieing of locsl diseases like the Shakes, Yellow Fever and the ones coming back disabled can. it find help. You meet a group who comes to help from the north called Freeman Bureau who is here to try to help both the free blacks and whites who need help medically, to help find lost family members and teach the blacks to read and write. You meet Clyde a poor white man who lost his leg due to gangrene, Tom a former slave and rebel spy, and Eugenia a daughter of a planter who went bankrupt before the war. There is so many excellent characters in the book.
The author and the narrator were able to take you back in time and you became one of the characters and you laugh, cry and laugh and cry even more.
