Choose FI: A Blueprint for Financial Independence

A common resolution set at the beginning of a new year is to “get my financial house in order”. But how can you build a house, let alone pour any kind of foundation, without a blueprint? There are dozens of books and gurus trying to push their advice and tell you how to spend and invest your money. And then, there are three suburban dads just trying to make the world a little bit better.

Meet Brad Barrett and Jonathan Mendonsa of the award-winning ChooseFI podcast and Chris Mamula of the popular blog Can I Retire Yet? They have walked the talk and now want to share their knowledge with you. Together, these three regular guys will show you how they made the relatively simple choices to reclaim decades of their lives, and how you can too.

Distilling the best of the popular ChooseFI podcast, this audiobook pulls from the collective knowledge of those who have decided to build a lifestyle around their passions instead of allowing their finances to dictate their future. These stories demonstrate universal principles, giving you the opportunity to pick the elements that are the most applicable to your financial situation and “choose your own adventure”.

The audiobook covers a wide range of topics that will help you build a strong financial foundation:

  • Developing a growth mindset
  • Defining your values and aligning them with your spending
  • Cutting years from your estimated retirement date
  • Questioning the status quo on “required expenses”
  • Cutting travel expenses and putting family vacations within your reach
  • Learning how to earn more and live with abundance
  • Updating the common accepted wisdom on college education and the debt associated with it
  • Cutting through the noise on investing to discover strategies that work
  • Showing how to implement investment strategies that enable the lifestyle you desire while controlling downside risk

Whether you have mountains of debt now or are recently debt-free and wondering what to do next, Choose FI: Your Blueprint to Financial Independence will give you the information to guide your next move.

I read FIRE 5 years ago but probably should have read this one first and glad I have. Lots of actual takeaways. Will need to reread the key parts.

Great book and resource!

I loved how there were actual clips from the podcast. Very insightful. I can't wait to get started on house hacking next year and I wouldn't even have ever known about it if it wasn't for this book.

The perfect college student graduation present

I've read/listened to a lot of books on FI, but this is by far the best one. I read all of the books referenced in here and love how they showed the many different paths to FI and didn't glorify one over the other. They were honest about the benefits and pitfalls and continued to emphasize how every path is different while giving you helpful, easy to follow tops for each one.

I definitely recommend for someone just starting out on the path to FI or someone like myself who has pushed and pulled in many different directions and struggling to figure out what path is best for me and my life. The most important point of this book is that no matter what path you start on in your journey to FI, you can always change down there road. So simple, but just this piece of advice removed so much stress off of me.

The best book on FI!
