Lady Amelia Talbot, revels in the simplicity of her life, content in the company of her brother and her beloved dogs. Marriage has never been her desire, especially since the only man who ever stirred her heart, the Duke of Pembroke, departed for London years ago, never to return. Amelia has convinced herself that her unrequited feelings are a thing of the past. However, when fate orchestrates their reunion, she is once again ensnared by his presence. Summoning all her courage, she approaches him, only to be hurt and disappointed again.

Can Amelia uncover the truth behind the Duke's seemingly cold and indifferent exterior?

George Fitzroy, the Duke of Pembroke, returns to the district after a five-year sojourn in London. The enchanting Lady Amelia has never strayed far from his thoughts. Bound by the strictures of gentlemanly conduct and his deep friendship with her brother, he could never claim her as his own. His departure was an attempt to forget, yet when their paths cross once more at a ball, the old flame reignites with newfound intensity. Desperate to mask his true feelings, George pushes her away. Only this time, he pushes her into the clutches of a man who may very well ruin her.

Will George muster the resolve to court the woman he loves and save her from a dangerous suitor?

As Amelia entertains the advances of her new suitor, giving him a chance, George is torn between love and duty. The woman he adores is in peril, but his clumsy efforts to warn her only alienate her further. Is Amelia at risk of falling for someone who threatens to destroy her? When George finally gathers the courage to declare his love, will it be too late for them? Or will true love prevail, surmounting the formidable odds that seek to keep them apart?

This book exceeded my eyeroll limit in chapter 9. I'm sooo done with female leads who are a poorly written and over-the-top Elizabeth Bennett. Her pride in her self-proclaimed ability to read people and prejudice against the truth-teller made me want to stop listening at chapter 9. Her motivations seem forced only so the author can provide an emotional arc; not because they make sense.

Not sure why I listened to the end
